10 amazing José Abreu stats

José Abreu finally reached the postseason in 2020 after his White Sox teams fell short in each of his first six MLB campaigns. Not only was it rewarding to see the big Cuban first baseman finally make it to the big stage after battling it out during some lean years, but Abreu was the key offensive weapon as the Sox surged into the playoffs. He’ll be garnering some MVP attention in the weeks to come, but as we celebrate the seven-year anniversary of his signing with Chicago, let’s take a look at ten impressive statistical feats & notes of his career thus far.

The first reports of Abreu’s defection from Cuba surfaced August 11, 2013. He signed with the White Sox October 29th – 79 days later. Coincidentally, he would wear #79 for the White Sox.

Abreu hit a White Sox rookie record 36 home runs in 2014. It set an American League record for most home runs for a player in the season of his MLB debut.

From 2014-19, Abreu recorded 20-plus home runs and 30-plus doubles. He’s one of only three players to hit those marks in each of his first six MLB seasons, along with Ted Williams & Albert Pujols. He most likely would have done it again in 2020 if it weren’t for the shortened season.

Abreu isn’t known for his speed, but in 2017 he logged six triples… one more than the Toronto Blue Jays had as a team!

The White Sox have well over 100 years of history. It took Abreu only six years to climb to sixth in White Sox history in career home runs, and then he reached fifth place in year seven. Abreu currently sits at 198 home runs and has a chance to climb a few more spots in 202

Abreu had a career-best 22-game hitting streak in 2020; his second career hitting streak of 20-plus games. In White Sox history, only Abreu and Hall of Famer Eddie Collins have had multiple hit streaks of 20-plus games. Abreu’s 22-game hitting streak accounted for 36.7 percent of the 60-game season. 36.7 percent of a 162-game season is 59 games, which would be a record.

During an August series at Wrigley Field, Abreu rewrote the White Sox history book, becoming the first player in White Sox history to:

-    Homer in 4 straight at-bats
-    Hit 5 home runs over a 2-game span
-    Hit 6 home runs in a series

Abreu has led the AL in RBI in each of the last two seasons. Abreu now has two of the three AL-leading RBI totals in White Sox franchise history, joining only Dick Allen in 1972. In 2020, Abreu had 60 RBI in 60 games, becoming the first player in White Sox history to average an RBI a game (minimum 30 games).

Jose Abreu led the American League in Hits, RBI and Total Bases in 2020. Since the RBI became an official stat in 1920, only Jim Rice (1978), Carl Yastrzemski (1967) & Lou Gehrig (1931) have led the junior circuit in all three categories. Prior to 1920, Ty Cobb (four times) and Napoleon Lajoie (twice) pulled it off.
