The coaching matchup created the buzz for Monday's final-round game in the marathon-like Mundelein holiday prep boys basketball tournament.

But the clash between Tim Bowen's Carmel Corsairs and Brian Moe's Grayslake Central Rams was decided by the players on the court.

Carmel played better, and went home with a 58-49 victory and a 3-2 final record in this six-team, round-robin event. Moe's Rams finished 1-4 at Mundelein, but gained valuable experience for the season ahead.

Bowen used to coach at Grayslake Central, and Moe replaced him.

Bowen still teaches at Grayslake Central, and said it was fun coaching against kids he sees every day at school.

"I told them they'd be getting a little bit of extra homework if they gave me a hard time," joked Bowen. "I have three of the (Grayslake Central) kids in my physics class and two more in my study hall."

"There were lots of nods and smiles in the hallways, but we didn't say much at school today. We gave each other good-luck fist-bumps, but hopefully not too much luck."

Once the game started, Bowen's team took command. Carmel went ahead for good at 10-9 late in the first quarter. The biggest lead was 58-42 late in the fourth quarter.

Leading scorers for Carmel were Dan Feld (20 points) and Doug Meyer (15).

The Rams were led by C.J. Stempeck (17 points, 9 rebounds), Casey Boyle (14 points, 8 rebounds, 4 blocks), and Kyle Shepard (11 points).

Carmel returns to action Wednesday against unbeaten Vernon Hills.

Grayslake Central is off until Dec. 10.
