On the night Benet honored the return of former quarterback Dan LeFevour by retiring his jersey, it was the return of its star point guard that defined the night.

Sparked by the return of Northwestern-bound David Sobolewski to the lineup, No. 2 Benet cruised to a 36-23 victory over St. Patrick Friday night in Lisle.

By scoring all eight of his points in just over a two-minute span in the first quarter, Sobolewski scored the most points he had in a game since tallying 13 first-half points in a Redwing victory over Marian Catholic on Jan. 13.

Im in pain, but its definitely improving, Sobolewski said of the back problems that have been plaguing him for about three weeks and has forced him in-and-out of the lineup. I couldnt have played at this time last week. So Im excited. Ill take care of it tonight and (Saturday) morning. Ill be ready to play Marist tomorrow night.

Its a slow-paced game. We didnt actually expect them to slow it down like that, Redwings senior guard Matt Parisi said. And they just wanted to slow us down, contain us and just try to make us play their style. We still pulled it out despite what they tried to throw at us.

We just stayed calm and just adjusted on the fly.

Taking a 14-11 lead into the second quarter, the Redwings finally got back on the scoreboard two-and-a-half minutes into the quarter courtesy of a field goal from center Frank Kaminsky and they held the Shamrocks without a field goal for the entire second quarter and took a 18-12 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The Redwings extended their lead out to as many as nine points in the third quarter before St. Patrick cut the deficit to five heading into the fourth quarter and proceeded to end the game on an 8-0 run after a three-pointer from Shamrocks senior forward Jacob Williams trimmed the Redwing lead to five with six-and-a-half minutes remaining in the game.

Kaminsky led all scorers with 11 points while Parisi added nine points for Benet.

With a victory Saturday night, on Senior Night, Benet (23-0, 9-0 East Suburban Catholic) will clinch at least a share of its second consecutive conference title.

Itll be huge, especially on our Senior Night, Sobolewski said. This group of seniors hasnt lost at home in two years, so we want to make the most of (Saturday) and realize its our last chance of playing on our home court in front of our home fans. Itll be a special night.

Williams scored a team-high seven points and grabbed five rebounds for St. Patrick (11-9, 4-5 East Suburban Catholic).
