St. Joseph isnt having its usual success this season under legendary coach Gene Pingatore. But that didnt stop No. 3 De La Salle coach Tom White from appreciating the Meteors 67-48 Catholic League North win at St. Joseph Friday night.

Anytime you go to Westchester and get a W, people dont understand how big of a win that is, White said. I student-taught at (St. Joseph 27 years ago and coach Pingatore was famous then. Twenty-seven years later and hes still kicking ass.

What was impressive of the Meteors win Friday night was the fact that Illinois-bound Mike Shaw only chipped in six points on the night. The senior forward hurt his knee in the first quarter and appeared to be laboring throughout the contest.

Its nothing serious, Shaw said. Ill be fine.

Dre Henley led the Meteors with 16 points while Alvin Ellis (15 points) and Jaylon Tate (14 points) also scored in double figures.

This is Mikes and my team, no doubt about that, Henley said. But if we happen to have off nights we got plenty of guys that can step up and score.

De La Salle (18-2, 8-1) built a 31-19 lead at the half thanks to 10 first-half points from Henley. The Meteors never let the Chargers get within single digits in the second half.

In their last Catholic League North game, the Chargers (6-14, 2-7) gave No. 6 Hales a run for its money while losing 60-57.

(De La Salle) is much taller than Hales, Pingatore said. Their size gave us fits. Theyre a very good team.

The Meteors also helped themselves at free-throw line by shooting 21-for-25. White was all smiles when talking about the 84 percent free-throw accuracy.

Thats something we work on a lot, White said. We got a lot of young guys on this team so its important that we make the easy points.
