Danks to have surgery, out for rest of season

John Danks will have surgery on Monday and miss the remainder of the 2012 season, the White Sox announced Tuesday afternoon in Minnesota. Danks hasn't pitched in the majors since May 19 and will finish the season with a 5.70 ERA in nine starts.

Danks threw four innings in a rehab start with Triple-A Charlotte on June 12, his last outing before he was diagnosed with a grade 1 tear of his subscapularis muscle in his shoulder.

After the diagnosis, Danks didn't sound too concerned.

"It's not thought to be anything real major," he said June 18. "Get some rest and get back at it."

Danks has seen some improvement over the last month, and some thought he could return by September. But with Francisco Liriano in the fold, the White Sox appear to be able to manage not having Danks back this season.

Last December, Danks signed a five-year, 65 million extension with the White Sox. He received a 7.5 million signing bonus and a 500,000 base salary for 2012, bringing his season total to 8 million. He'll earn 14.25 million per season from 2013-2016.
