Gimenez tearing it up in winter ball

Hector Gimenez is in the midst of another huge offseason.

Gimenez, who is projected to be the White Sox backup catcher behind Tyler Flowers, carries a .307.385.521 slash line with seven homers and 28 RBIs in 140 at-bats in Venezuela this winter.

Gimenez is second on his team -- Tigres de Aragua -- in homers and RBIs even though his at-bats rank fifth on the squad. Last winter, Gimenez, 30, was named a Caribbean Series All-Star.

The White Sox head into the 2013 season without A.J. Pierzynski behind the plate for the first time since 2004. The plan is to give Flowers, twice rated a top-100 prospect by Baseball America, the first crack at the starting job. General manager Rick Hahn also stated in December the team has no problem with Gimenez as the teams backup, even though he has just 11 games of major league experience.

Gimenez was 5-for-11 with an RBI in five games for the White Sox last season after a September promotion. He hit .259 with 14 homers and 57 RBIs in 99 games at Triple-A Charlotte.
