White Sox asked about Ichiro

The White Sox were as surprised as anyone by the news Monday of Japanese superstar Ichiro Suzukis trade to the New York Yankees.

A baseball source confirmed the White Sox recently inquired with the Seattle Mariners about the 10-time All-Star outfielder and were told he was unavailable.

A free agent after this season, Suzuki, a career .322 hitter, was traded with cash to the Yankees for two minor-leaguer players.

Reports of the deal surfaced minutes after the Detroit Tigers acquired infielder Omar Infante and pitcher Anibal Sanchez from the Miami Marlins for pitcher Jacob Turner and two minor-leaguers.
