You gotta be bleepin' me: What's your favorite Hawk rant?

Share

Alex Cobb had beaned a pair of White Sox players heading into the bottom of the fourth inning on Wednesday. The first was Gordon Beckham on a pitch that hardly looked intentional. The second was a fastball that went straight into the back of A.J. Pierzynski, a pitch that very well could've been interpreted as being thrown with a purpose.

Jose Quintana has been good for the White Sox, but the 23-year-old hasn't had great control and has been prone to seeing a few pitches get away from him. Maybe Quintana and the White Sox were trying to send a message when the Colombian starter threw a fastball behind Ben Zobrist's knees, we'll probably never know.

But home plate umpire Mark Wegner decided to forgo a warning and boot Quintana, and eventually manager Robin Ventura, from the game. And that spawned this epic Hawk Harrelson rant:

Here's the question we have for you: Where does Hawk's rant from today rank among his best blowups? Here's a few of them to job your memory:

May 26, 2010: "Joe West deserves a suspension, he needs a rest...that is a flat-out disgrace to the umpiring profession, what this guy has been doing."
West had already ejected Ozzie Guillen for arguing a balk call earlier in the game, and when Mark Buehrle made his usual pickoff move to first base again, West called a balk. Buehrle tossed his glove down in frustration, West kicked Buehrle out of the game and Hawk ripped into West.
Aug. 1, 2005: "Are you nuts? You have got to be -- That is total BS! ... That is so bad. For a veteran umpire...that's so much BS, it's unbelievable."

One out away from throwing at least six innings in 50 consecutive games, Mark Buehrle hit Baltimore's B.J. Surhoff, and home plate umpire Brian Gorman ejected Buehrle from the game.

April 26, 2003: More BS

There had already been a little bad blood between the White Sox and Twins early in the season, and Doug Mientkiewicz's comments about taking the All-Star Game away from the Sox made a few waves heading into the series. Jon Garland hit Mientkiewicz in the sixth inning and was promptly ejected by Bruce Froemming, spawning a pretty good diatribe.

Sept. 8, 1991: "Joe Brinkman made the call!"

Monty Farriss' ground ball past Robin Ventura down the left field line was clearly touched by a fan, and third base umpire Joe Brinkman appeared to motion to call fan interference, which would've kept Juan Gonzalez from scoring the winning run. But Brinkman rescinded his call or said he didn't make it, which led to this.
