Safety first: Major competition for Wright?

Share

Major Wright has not resolved all concerns at strong safety. He was late breaking to provide deep coverage on what turned into a deep TD pass from Jay Cutler to Early Bennett in Tuesdays session.

Wright came back with a perfect break for a sideline interception Wednesday and needs to continue making plays without the disaster breakdowns that sent Chris Harris away last year and others before that.

Brandon Hardin was the Bears No. 3 pick this year, the third straight year with a third-round pick invested at safety (Wright, Chris Conte). Hardin and Conte both have better cover skills than Wrightthey are both converted cornerbacksso this is looming as possibly a strong competition into camp and beyond.

Coaches have demonstrated short fuses with safeties who fail to secure deep in the Cover-2ish scheme Lovie Smith and Rod Marinelli are running.

Contact police on hand Wednesday

The Seattle Seahawks lost a couple of offseason workout days because of too much contact during drills. No one expects the Bears to lose any time but the NFL Players Association was on hand to monitor practice Wednesday.

Former Bears cornerback Tom Carter was at practice as an observer for the NFLPA as part of the monitoring process. It usually will be in something like a blitz drill where somebody comes through and somebody puts a helmet in somebodys chest, Carter said.

Carter is perhaps an ironic choice to drop in on the Bears. A former star at Notre Dame and No. 1 pick of the Washington Redskins, Carter was signed by the Bears as a free agent in 1997 but was cut during the 1999 season when then-coordinator Greg Blache was not satisfied with the level of hitting Carter delivered.
