NBC Sports cousin Mike Florio over at Pro Football Talk has put together an interesting counter to NFL Network’s Top 100 players, one what is assembled from voting by players. Sort of.
Over the stretch of the next four Mondays, Mike will put out PFT’s “Top 100,” 25 at a time. I was one of Mike’s voters, along with Sports Illustrated’s Peter King, CSN New England’s Tom Curran, CSN Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco, Alex Marvez of FOX Sports, NFL writers Sam Farmer of the Los Angeles Times, Bob Glauber of Newsday, John McClain of the Houston Chronicle and Charean Williams of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, and a distinguished list of others totaling 40 with long experience covering and in some cases playing in the NFL.
Mike’s procedure was to require a list of the top 50 from each of us, rather than NFL Network’s 20.
The 2013 NFL Network list included five Bears: Lance Briggs, Tim Jennings, Brandon Marshall, Julius Peppers and Charles Tillman. Jay Cutler didn’t make the Top 100. Neither did Matt Forte.
The players’ rankings over the past couple years, as Mike mentions, included Donovan McNabb after he’d been benched and Tim Tebow after he’d been Tim Tebow. Pro Football Talk’s “Top” will doubtless have some eyebrow-raisers but if Mike’s work on his “Faces of the Franchise” Mt. Rushmore series is any indicator, this won’t be boring.
Check back later and we’ll have a run through Nos. 76-100.
