Alyne Payton, mother of late NFL Hall of Famer Walter Payton, passed away on Monday morning. Family members report that she passed away in a hospital in Mississippi, following a battle with a longtime illness. Payton was 87 years old.
Alyne Payton had lost both her husband, Edward, and her son Walter in previous years. Edward suffered a fatal aneurysm in 1979, and Walter died 1999 at the age of 45, following complications from a rare liver disease.
Walter Payton is considered one of the most iconic running backs in NFL history, having played 13 years with the Chicago Bears. His legacy is commemorated annually with the Walter Payton Award, and the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award.
Services for Alyne Payton are scheduled for Friday at Black's Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Jackson. Burial will be held at the Resthaven Cemetry in Columbia on Saturday, where Alyne will be buried along with Walter's ashes.
