Right guard Kyle Long was in pads for the first time this training camp, taking part in the individual drills with his position group but not the team sessions. His availability for the Philadelphia Eagles game next Friday will need time to settle itself after the team’s Sunday off.

“Things are looking up,” said coach Marc Trestman. “The plan is still in place, we said he was going to do individual in pads, and he did, so we’ll see where he is Monday.”

Said Long, a 2013 Pro Bowl alternate as a rookie: “I’m not sure what the plan is. I know we’ll make more progress on Monday. It’s tough but (Bears medical staff) do a great job of keeping people healthy so I’ll keep listening to what they have to say.”

While Long was part-way back, the defense was without defensive end Jared Allen, cornerback Tim Jennings and defensive tackle Jeremiah Ratliff, besides safeties Chris Conte and Craig Steltz on the PUP list.
