What scouts are saying:

“Highly productive, hard-charging slasher who runs more competitively than he does powerfully and picks up yardage in chunks. Has some first-round traits and is one of the most instinctive runners in this year's draft class, though his stock could be affected by off-the-field troubles and an average combine showing.” (Nolan Nawrocki,

“Muscled-up athlete with good instincts, light feet, good leg drive and the determination to handle a featured role as a team's primary runner in the NFL. Good recognition of the hole, showing the burst to and through gaps to take advantage when the avenue is clear. While Carey's determined running is commendable he has to know when to go down, too often exposing himself and the ball to unnecessary hits by lunging forward and too often leaving his feet. Does not possess elite breakaway speed.” (Rob Rang,

“Carey is a slasher who has nice quickness and a burst to get into the second level. While he isn't a big back, he has some physicality to him and can pick up yards after contact. Carey had a number of big runs after breaking a tackle in the first 10 yards. However, his ability to get yards after contact will be diminished by NFL defenders. Carey isn't a burner back, so defensive backs can catch him from behind. His slow run at the Combine was further proof of that. ” (

Fit for the Bears:

It's no secret the Bears have struggled to find a backup running back for Matt Forte in recent years. Their search led them to Carey in the fourth round of this year's draft. Carey could be a nice change-of-pace back to Forte as a physical back who excels in the passing game as a receiver out of the backfield, which would make him a nice fit in Marc Trestman's offense.
