Offensive lineman Edwin Williams, at one point viewed as a possible alternative to Olin Kreutz at center, was among the Bears’ roster cuts Friday morning.
Williams had been given a two-year contract extension at the end of the 2011 season during which he had started the final seven games at left guard. He was inserted at left guard again late last season as the Bears looked for ways to stanch the bleeding at the position — Chris Spencer, Chilo Rachal, Spencer again — but he was benched in the second meeting with Minnesota and ultimately replaced by undrafted free agent James Brown.
Former Illinois State safety Tom Nelson, in camps with the Cincinnati Bengals (2011) and Philadelphia Eagles (2012), was also released by the Bears.
