Bears roster trims continued Monday with the team parting ways with veteran safety Craig Steltz, leaving just five draft picks from the Jerry Angelo years on a roster that was down to 77.
Only Lance Briggs and Charles Tillman (2003), Matt Forte (2008) and Stephen Paea and Chris Conte (2011) remain from 10 drafts by former Jerry Angelo and his staff between 2002-11.
Steltz was a fourth-round pick out of LSU in the 2008 draft and started a total of eight games over his six Bears seasons, spent primarily on special teams. His 58 career special-teams tackles ranked second only to Corey Graham on the Bears during his time with the team.
His roster chances were clearly in question when the organization signed and drafted a half-dozen safeties, and he was not helped by a groin injury that held him out of most of practice through the offseason.
