The feel-good tsunami that comes with a 2-0 start to a season appears to have washed away anything obscuring the glow from a lengthening list of “brilliant” and “genius” individuals within the Bears.

Tight end Martellus Bennett dubbed coach Marc Trestman a “genius” last Monday, appearing on "The Jay Cutler Show" on WMVP AM-1000. Bennett’s measure for genius status in Trestman’s case: “I always say Coach Trestman reminds me of the first Willy Wonka,” Bennett said, adding, “I thought Willy Wonka was brilliant.”

Trestman, who said on Wednesday that “Martellus is from another place,” added to Bennett’s stable of nicknames with “Rain Man,” the savant character immortalized by Dustin Hoffman in the movie by the same name.

Cutler described the Bears’ “Rain Man:” “Knows everything. If you ask him something, you could go back to our first game and ask him about the game plan and he’ll be able to tell you what we were doing, what fronts we were going against, the blocking schemes.”

And Cutler himself has credibility on the matter of brilliance. Brandon Marshall said so, declaring, “He’s brilliant.” Twice, in fact. “He’s brilliant.”

Cutler’s assessment of Marshall’s assessment? “No.”
