Since the last several coaches from the defensive side didn’t exactly work out too well, the Detroit Lions are starting along the NFC North trend line set by the Bears and Packers: getting a coach with enough offensive pedigree to do more than have Matthew Stafford throw to Calvin Johnson and occasionally hand off to Reggie Bush.

The leading candidate to replace Jim Schwartz as head coach is Ken Whisenhunt, current San Diego offensive coordinator and who guided the Arizona Cardinals to a Super Bowl appearance, per Adam Schefter at ESPN. Also in the mix are Darrell Bevell, Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator and Jim Caldwell, Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator.

Any of these would be a dramatic direction shift from Schwartz, Rod Marinelli and Dick Jauron, who succeeded Steve Mariucci in 2005.
