Marcus Smith (DE), Louisville

6'3" | 251 lbs.

2013 stats:

42 tackles, 18.5 tackles for loss, 3 pass deflections, 4 forced fumbles

2nd/3rd Round

What the scouts are saying:

"A high school quarterback turned pass rusher who broke out with 14.5 sacks as a senior (1.12 sacks-per-game average led nation), Smith projects as a pass-rushing, 3-4 right outside linebacker in the pros. Should contribute initially on passing downs and has eventual starter potential as his game becomes more well-rounded." (Nolan Nawrocki,

"Smith served as a moveable chess piece on the Cardinals' defense throughout his career, logging time at every position along the defensive line as well as a stand-up outside linebacker. Optimists will view him as a hybrid defender capable of finding a niche in any scheme. Others will see Smith as a 'tweener prospect who struggles to handle double-teams at the line and lacks the elite athleticism to develop into an impact playmaker in the NFL." (Rob Rang,

"Smith is an edge player who burst onto the scene as a senior. He translates as that type of linebacker in the NFL. His size and frame could tempt a team to build him into a 4-3 defensive end as well. Smith’s explosive movements and instincts make him a high-upside pass-rusher. If his pass-rush repertoire and hand usage can be developed by an NFL coaching staff, he could become a high-level edge-defender on Sundays." (Darren Page,

Fit for the Bears:

Smith is listed as a defensive end, but has seen time at defensive tackle as well as outside linebacker — in a 3-4 defense — at Louisville. He's an explosive defender who would likely be logging most of his time at tackle for the Bears, but is better suited as a defensive end in a 4-3 defense. If that's the case, the Bears might pass on Smith considering the DE position has become the obvious strength this offseason.
