Connor Shaw (QB), South Carolina
6'0" | 206 lbs.
2,447 pass yds, 63.4% completion, 24 pass TD, 1 INT, 558 rush yds, 6 rush TD
What scouts are saying:
"Fine touch and accuracy. Very good mobility and movement in the pocket. Tough and gritty competitor. Produced a rare 24-1 TD-INT ratio as a senior and cut down on mental mistakes that characterized his play earlier in his career. Has a 27-5 career starting record, has rallied his team to victory off the bench and carries a calm, confident, poised field presence. " (Nolan Nawrocki, NFL.com)
"Lacks prototype measurements and arm talent and played in a high-percentage, dink-and-dunk passing game that has not translated well to the pros, yet possesses the intangibles, toughness, football intelligence and escapability to warrant developing. Is the type of player you root for and has make-it qualities that could eventually surprise. Potentially adds situational value." (NFL.com)
Fit for the Bears:
Shaw seems like exactly the kind of quarterback who would do well with a couple years under "The Quarterback Whisperer" Marc Trestman. Shaw has the intangibles and work ethic that leaders are made of, but needs to improve his physical tools and make the transition to the pro game. What better way to do that than by sitting third or fourth on the depth chart of a team like the Bears? Shaw is the type of quarterback Trestman would love to get into the system and work with, and it creates a good situation for Shaw to learn and develop behind Jay Cutler and whoever the Bears wind up with as a backup. Plus, it won't cost the team a high draft pick to select a project like Shaw.
