Lovie Smith isn't the only ex-Bears coach heading to Tampa Bay.
According to an ESPN report, Rod Marinelli, who served under Smith as defensive coordinator with the Bears, will be Smith's defensive coordinator with the Buccaneers. It was reported that Smith would be hired as the new Bucs coach earlier Wednesday.
Marinelli spent four years under Smith on the Bears' coaching staff, serving as defensive line coach and assistant head coach in 2009 before adding defensive coordinator to that list of titles from 2010 to 2012. In two of those three seasons, the Bears ranked in the top four in the NFL in scoring defense.
Smith and Marinelli coached together in Tampa Bay under Tony Dungy, and Marinelli spent a total of 10 years as an assistant on the Buccaneers staff.
Earlier Wednesday, reports mentioned another Bears connection, recently fired Vikings head coach and former Bears defensive back Leslie Frazier, as a candidate to serve as Smith's new defensive coordinator in Tampa.
