With veteran long snapper Pat Mannelly still wearing a plastic walking boot the calf he injured Monday in the Green Bay game, the Bears signed former Bear Jeremy Cain.
Mannelly, who took the boot off during Wednesday’s open locker room, will be “week to week,” a team spokesman said.
Cain played eight games for the Bears in 2004-05, for the Tennessee Titans in 2007 and the last four seasons with Jacksonville. He was a reserve linebacker and special-teams contributor with the Bears but Mannelly was the long snapper those two seasons.
Defensive tackle Jay Ratliff went from “agreed to terms” to “signed” on Wednesday, but will not practice for perhaps another two weeks based on recovery from injuries that led to his release by the Dallas Cowboys.
Lance Briggs (shoulder) also was listed as not practicing on Wednesday.
The Lions were without multiple starters for Wednesday’s practice: defensive end Ziggy Ansah (ankle), safety Louis Delmas (knee), tackle Corey Hilliard (knee), and nickel corner Bill Bentley (knee).
