Former Bears coach Lovie Smith had no interest in the head-coaching vacancy at USC. Going back to his home state as an NFL head coach, however, is likely a different matter altogether.

According to multiple sources, Smith already is on the short list of Houston Texans owner Bob McNair after the Texans fired coach Gary Kubiak on Friday. Defensive coordinator Wade Phillips was elevated to interim head coach after the Texans’ losing streak reached 11 on Thursday night against the woeful Jacksonville Jaguars.

Smith, fired at the end of the 2012 season and replaced by Marc Trestman, has been doing consulting for the NFL while drawing the $5 million due under the final year of his Bears contract.

He will not be the only candidate, with Phillips being given consideration in addition to other assistant coaches currently under contract with teams.
