Cutler’s groin wasn’t the problem on Sunday. His ankle was and, in the end, so was his passing.

Cutler suffered an injury to his left ankle, which combined with his torn left groin to have him throwing too often off his back foot and too often to no one in particular. A throw from the Detroit 4 at the end of the first half was deflected by Ndamukong Suh and intercepted by linebacker DeAndre Levy. Cutler was unable to complete either of two passes to open receivers on the fourth-quarter possession after a Detroit missed field goal. That was the final indicator that got Cutler pulled in favor of Josh McCown.

“I just didn’t feel like I made some of the throws I wanted to make,” Cutler said. “Couldn’t move around, couldn’t be as mobile. ... I just kind of limited us.”

Cutler was 9-for-22 in the second half, made some good throws that narrowly missed going for scores and had 250 passing yards, 148 in the first half on some deft throws to move the chains at times. But his overall has to be measured by the difficulties in the second half.

Coming in cold for the second time in three games, McCown continued to get the offense into the end zone. He directed a 10-play, 74-yard drive in the fourth quarter culminating in a potential tying touchdown on an 11-yard pass to Brandon Marshall with 40 seconds to play.

McCown completed 6 of 9 passes for 62 yards, shook off one sack and finished with a 123.4 passer rating. The Bears have scored on 10 of 18 possessions behind McCown plus one ending in a missed field goal.

He put the Bears in position to tie on Sunday despite everyone in Soldier Field and on the Detroit side of the ball knowing he was going to throw.

“Josh doesn’t have a ‘C’ (captain designation) on his chest,” said wide receiver Brandon Marshall, “but he’s definitely one of our captains. He’s one of our emotional leaders.”
