“Teams” could get an “Incomplete” just because of coach Marc Trestman’s decision to pass on a field goal in the second quarter and try a fourth-down conversion, which failed. Robbie Gould did convert his shots from 25 and 32 yards but the not-attempted one that would have been from about 44 yards, and Gould is 72.4 percent successful from 40-49 yards.
Devin Hester gave the offense some field position with a 39-yard return of the opening kickoff that gave the offense field position that turned into a touchdown. Hester returned one punt 16 yards and had a chance for another that he mistakenly fair-caught, but he was at a solid level throughout.
Coverage units limited Michael Spurlock to fair-catching four punts as Adam Podlesh was effective with a net of 42.6 yards and gave his coverage time to be in position.
A false-start call on Blake Costanzo cost yardage on a first-quarter punt that left Detroit at its 41, not a workable situation against the Lions’ offense normally but the defense forced a three-and-out. Craig Steltz delivered two strong solo stops, with one each by Costanzo and Jerry Franklin.
