Coverage breakdowns were too numerous to count, accentuated by repeated failures to tackle and come up quickly enough in run support.
The Rams completed third-down passes of 19 and 32 yards in the third quarter when receivers eased into vacated areas of the secondary.
Zackary Bowman delivered a superb near-interception on a third-down attempt in the second quarter, defending Brian Quick. It was one of the few positive plays by the secondary.
Chris Conte was frozen and buckled on Tavon Austin’s reverse-field run for 65 yards on the game’s third play, and Tim Jennings failed to squeeze the run back to the inside. After the Matt Forte fumble, the Rams further attacked Conte, isolating tight end Jared Cook on him in the end zone. A Kellen Clemens pass was far overthrown, but Conte was still called for a clear bit of pass interference, turning a third-down stop into a touchdown one play later.
Conte and Major Wright lost Cook for a 27-yard completion on a third-down in the second-quarter.
St. Louis finished with 40-percent in third-down conversions, not terrible but not good enough when opportunities for stops were there.
