The line appeared thoroughly befuddled early by blitzes, and quarterback Jay Cutler was sacked three times in the Bears’ first 12 plays, once for a strip that turned into three New Orleans points. The Saints registered six hits on Cutler in addition to four tackles for loss.
Part of the problem, according to coach Marc Trestman, was that the Bears had answers for the blitzes being shown but didn’t get them communicated early enough. Some burden still rests with the basic rules of protections, however, and the Bears were beaten too frequently early.
“We went over the blitzes that they were going to bring throughout this week, and we made a few mistakes on the points,” said right tackle Jordan Mills. “But we came to the sideline and coach sat us down and told us to reset our minds, and from then on I felt like we went out there and did a good job.”
Right guard Kyle Long pulled and provided a perfect seal block in the hole behind left guard Matt Slauson for Matt Forte’s two-point conversion late in the fourth quarter.
A problem was that the running backs averaged only three yards per carry on five first-half carries when the Bears desperately needed the offense to stay on the field and establish some control of the game.
