Situations took Matt Forte out of the flow through too much of a game in which the game plan was to control the ball and clock and keep Drew Brees and the Saints offense on the sideline. But some of the problems were directly on Forte.

Forte bobbled a pitchout for a 10-yard loss on the first play from scrimmage, then juggled a screen pass two snaps later and came up short on a third-down conversion. His third-down drop of a check-down in the second quarter ended another possession.

He ended up with 55 rushing yards on 12 carries (46 yards per carry) and caught four of six passes thrown to him for 40 more yards. Michael Bush added 12 yard on his two carries.

But “we just gave them the ball too often,” Forte said. “No matter how many years we’re in this offense, it’s always going to be a work in progress. That’s why we go to practice, to try and get better at things we didn’t do well in the game.”

There were a number of those. Forte and to a lesser extent Bush were shaky on blitz pickup, contributing to some of the pressures on Cutler.

And while the plan was to run more than the 14 combined carries by Bush and Forte, “not being efficient on first down hurt us,” Cutler said. “Second-and-long’s, third-and-long’s, it’s hard to play that football game against a team like that.”
