If season started today, Richard Lagow would be Hoosiers' quarterback

If the season started today, Richard Lagow would be Indiana's starting quarterback.

At least that's what Indiana head coach Kevin Wilson told reporters Monday.

"Right now, Lagow’s getting the bulk of the work," Wilson said, his quotes published by the Indianapolis Star. "Richard’s been the best throughout camp. To say somebody’s the starter, if we’re playing today, Richard’s playing."

The Hoosiers' quarterback competition isn't over quite yet, but Big Ten fans who thought they'd be seeing a lot of Zander Diamont this season might want to get accustomed to Lagow, who transferred to Bloomington this offseason after playing one season at a junior college in Texas, completing 66 percent of his passes while throwing for 2,285 yards with 21 touchdowns compared to 10 interceptions.

Indiana needs a replacement at quarterback after Nate Sudfeld graduated as the program's all-time leading passer and became a sixth-round pick in the NFL Draft. The four-way battle features two carryovers from last year, Diamont and Danny Cameron, and two newcomers, Lagow and redshirt freshman Austin King. With Sudfeld leading the Hoosiers to the best offensive numbers in the Big Ten, Diamont and Cameron didn't see much action, with Diamont throwing 31 passes in two games and Cameron throwing 16 passes in one game, the duo combining for 231 yards and zero touchdowns.

Certainly there will be a time when an official decision is announced on who gets the start under center in Indiana's season-opener against Florida International. But right now, it seems a new name will be joining the Big Ten quarterback club soon.
