The Illini are getting their Class of 2018 recruiting started early.
While that might seem a little far off — there's three classes to stock until then — the Illini have already extended a scholarship offer to Houston Griffith, a defensive back who will enter Mount Carmel High School next month.

But before you start focusing on the oddity of the Illini offering a high school freshman-to-be, there is an Illinois connection: Houston Griffith is the son of former Illini running back Howard Griffith, and dad had some congratulations to offer Thursday night.
Howard Griffith had a prolific career at Illinois, highlighted by his NCAA-record-setting eight-touchdown performance against Southern Illinois in 1990. He's the Illini's career leader in touchdowns (33) and is the 10th all-time leading rusher with 2,485 yards. He went on to win a pair of Super Bowl titles with the Denver Broncos.
If Houston Griffith ends up picking the Illini and having the type of career his dad did, well then the Illini will be happy they got to him early.
