Illinois wide receiver Desmond Cain announced Thursday on Twitter that he will be transferring away from Champaign.

After a strong statistical performance as a true freshman during the 2015 season, Cain was utilized far less in Lovie Smith's first year.

He caught 52 passes for 492 yards as a freshman. As a sophomore this past season, he caught a mere five passes for 61 yards, appearing in only five games.

Cain was a three-star recruit in the Class of 2015 and picked Illinois over offers from Rutgers, Virginia and other FBS programs.

He wrote this on Twitter, the content of his protected tweet published by Illini Inquirer:

"After talking it over with my family it's best to move closer home to finish off my next few years in college! Thank you Illini! Has been amazing these two years I've been here and thank you all for the major support GO ILLINI!"
