Report: Rutgers investigating Kyle Flood over potential rules violation

Share

Rutgers head football coach Kyle Flood is under investigation at Rutgers for a potentially major rules violation, according to a report from NJ Advance Media's Keith Sargeant.

Sargeant reported that Flood is being investigated for allegedly sending an email to a university faculty member regarding the academic status of junior cornerback Nadir Barnwell, who could be in danger of becoming academically ineligible. Depending on the content of that email, Flood could face major punishment, potentially even firing.

From Sargeant's report:

If Flood is found to have failed to promote an atmosphere of compliance by attempting to provide an impermissible benefit to a student-athlete in his program, possible discipline includes a public reprimand, suspension or termination from his contract, a top athletics official familiar with the situation told NJ Advance Media.

The investigation currently has nothing to do with the NCAA or the Big Ten and is stemming from the university itself. The university's athletics compliance department, according to Sargeant, prohibits coaches communicating with instructors.

Flood is entering his fourth season as the head coach of the Scarlet Knights. He led Rutgers to an 8-5 record and a win in the Quick Lane Bowl last season, the program's first in the Big Ten.
