Blackhawks promote Maciver to assistant GM

The Blackhawks have found their new assistant general manager, and once again they've found him from within their own walls.

Norm Maciver was promoted to assistant general manager on Monday, less than a week after former assistant GM Marc Bergevin took the GM job with the Montreal Canadiens.

General manager Stan Bowman said Maciver "has an excellent handle on the players within our organization, from recent draft picks to veterans, and a great eye for talent evaluating. Promoting within our organization is something we take great pride in and we are very confident in what he will contribute on a daily basis as we strive to hire the best possible candidate at every position."

Indeed, the Blackhawks have promoted from within for this spot a few times now. Bergevin, who had been with the Blackhawks for several seasons, took the assistant GM job last year after Kevin Cheveldayoff headed to Winnipeg. Maciver just finished his fifth season with the Blackhawks; he's been the team's director of player personnel as well as director of player development, prior to this promotion.

Carl Edwards Jr.'s special tie to Memorial Day

Carl Edwards Jr.'s special tie to Memorial Day

For Carl Edwards Jr., Memorial Day has a special meaning.

That's because the Cubs reliever has a very close tie to the armed services.

Edwards met his fiance, Nette Smith, before her deployment in Afghanistan. Throughout her active service, Edwards kept in touch by writing her letters. Their relationship eventually blossomed, and now the couple has a one-year-old child.

With Smith's army commitment finished, she views Memorial Day as a time to appreciate all those who serve.

"To me, Memorial Day is a day set aside for me to remember some of the people I have met who sacrificed everything," Smith said.
