With just three days remaining before the Blackhawks' home opener and banner-raising ceremony, the defending Stanley Cup champions are hosting the Capitals for their final preseason matchup.

A number of roster cuts have been made on both teams since their earlier game back on Sept. 20, and tonight Blackhawks prospects will have one more chance to impress before a final group returns to the AHL's Rockford IceHogs.

With the selection process nearing its end, defenseman Mike Kostka will get another chance to make his case tonight inside the United Center. After suffering from a nasty hit delivered by Red Wings forward Teemu Pulkkinen at the start of the preseason, he missed a bit of playing time.

Tonight the competition between Kostka and fellow defenseman Ryan Stanton continues for the Blackhawks' final D-man spot, and now coach Joel Quenneville will be able to take one more good look at the former Toronto Maple Leaf in a game setting.

Looking ahead

The Blackhawks and Capitals will meet for their third time in two weeks as Alex Ovechkin and his teammates join the defending Cup champions in their home opener on Tuesday, Oct. 1.

The Blackhawks will head back to Washington D.C. on April 11 to play in their second and final regular-season matchup against the Capitals.
