Antti Raanta said 2013 ended in about his most ideal way possible after earning his first NHL shutout against the Los Angeles Kings on Dec. 30. Now that ending will become even sweeter for the Blackhawks goaltender as he and Kings netminder Martin Jones were both named the NHL's co-rookies of the month for December.
It's been a big few weeks for Raanta, who allowed two or fewer goals in 10 of his 12 games played during the month in Corey Crawford's absence. In that time he complied an 8-1-3 record with a 2.23 goals-against average and .912 save percentage.
Jones made his NHL debut on Dec. 3 and went on to win his first eight consecutive starts, making him only the second goaltender in NHL history to do so after Bob Froese during the 1982-83 season.
Jones is 8-3-0 with a 1.41 goals-against average, .950 save percentage and three shutouts in 11 appearances this season.
