The Blackhawks and Kevin Hayes have officially parted ways after the two sides failed to reach a contract by today's deadline.
Hayes, 22, will become an unrestricted free agent and, as compensation, the Blackhawks will receive the 54th overall selection in the 2015 NHL Draft.
General manager Stan Bowman released this statement on Friday:
"We offered Kevin what we believed was a generous and fair contract. Unfortunately, he felt it was in his best interests to become a free agent. We are looking forward to the compensatory draft pick we are receiving and are focused on the excitement surrounding the start of training camp next month.”
Hayes was taken with the 24th overall pick by Chicago in the 2010 draft.
