Before heading on their six-game road trip, the Chicago Blackhawks recalled Brandon Pirri from the Rockford IceHogs on Monday.
The 22-year-old Pirri had six goals and five assists in 24 games with the Blackhawks this season. He suffered a lower-body injury at the end of December before returning to IceHogs games last week.
There's no doubt Pirri has a scoring touch; he showed that early in his last stint with the Blackhawks. But he was point-less in his last eight games with Chicago before the Blackhawks reassigned him to Rockford in early December. Coach Joel Quenneville has made it clear that he wants Pirri to develop his defensive game more. Where Pirri fits into the Blackhawks roster is uncertain at this time. He had some second-line center work when he was here in October and November and could be there again, although Quenneville was happy with how Andrew Shaw was doing there with Brandon Saad and Patrick Kane.
The Blackhawks will take 23 players on this road trip.
