Jeff Samardzija earned his tough-guy reputation as a 6-foot-5 wide receiver at Notre Dame, but he's still flexing on the mound.

In response to a question regarding protective gear for pitchers, the Cubs pitcher responded that he'd never wear it...unless forced.

"It’s like the old-school days in hockey,” Samardzija said. “Those guys weren’t asking for helmets. They made them put ‘em on. But we know we put ourselves at risk when we go out there. You need to be ready for that any time."

Mike Dunleavy recently took a hockey-style approach when he suffered a major cut that required stitches against the Houston Rockets, only to return later in the game and score 18 points in the third quarter alone. The Blackhawks put up a No. 34 "Dunleavy" jersey in the United Center locker room, and Samardzija may be next.
