Scott Krinch

Sam Montgomery (DE), LSU

6-3 | 262 lbs.

2012 Stats:

37 tackles, 13 TFL, 8 sacks, 3 QBH, 2 FF

Projection:

2nd Round

Strengths:

Displays a tall frame with room for more muscle mass. Very good initial first step, showing the ability to chase down quarterbacks from behind. Doesn't back down from challenges, using his strength to collapse the pocket. High-motor player who loves the physicality of the game. Montgomery was able to bounce back after suffering a serious knee injury in 2010.

Weaknesses:

Doesn't follow the ball well off the snap, making him late on the play too often. Montgomery doesn't have great flexibility and gives up on plays when he gets engaged by a blocker. Struggles to change directions, allowing running backs to slip by him too easily. Scouts showed concern at the Combine after Montgomery admitted to taking plays off against lesser opponents while at LSU.

Fit for the Bears:

Montgomery is an intriguing prospect, if put in the right system, could blossom in the NFL. Though the chances of that happening with the Bears is slim. Phil Emery selected Shea McClellin with their first choice in the 2012 Draft and it isn't likely that he nabs a defensive end early in 2013. If Montgomery slips into the third round, his talent may be too good to pass up, but the Bears have more pressing needs to fill early on in the Draft.
