Next step: Bears GM

The first wave of interviews for the Bears next general manager by President Ted Phillips concluded Friday and is expected to be followed by a decision within the next week, before the start of Super Bowl week in Indianapolis, sources told CSNChicago.com.

Phillips interviewed five candidates in the span of five days: Jason Licht, pro personnel director with the New England Patriots; San Diego Chargers personnel director Jimmy Raye; New York Giants college scouting director Marc Ross; current Bears personnel director Tim Ruskell; and Phil Emery, a former Bears scout now college scouting director for the Kansas City Chiefs.

The search is not expected to widen to take in other candidates. The next step is due to be a second interview with finalists unless deliberations and discussions over this weekend produce a successor to Jerry Angelo.

The process has differed significantly from the one that yielded Angelo.

Phillips employed a search firm to develop a preliminary list of candidates, then refine it to 10 strong prospects. Interviews took that list to three, who were brought to Halas Hall for meetings, from which Angelo emerged as the choice.
