Bollig sent to Rockford; Montador nearing return?

March 6, 2013, 4:30 pm

Brandon Bollig was reassigned to the Rockford IceHogs to make room for defenseman Steve Montador, who was activated today, coach Joel Quenneville said prior to the Blackhawks hosting the Colorado Avalanche.

Montador, who suffered from concussion problems last season, has played in just one game since last February. Quenneville said he's available to play, but will be out of tonight's game. He added the defenseman could travel to Colorado. The Blackhawks now have eight active defensemen on the roster.

"We know that the first seven (defensemen) we have that are playing to date are playing extremely well. When you have to sit one out, it's always a tough decision," Quenneville said. "We'll see how Monty works his way in; it's something we'll measure. We're happy with this group we have now. We'll see how it progresses."

Ray Emery is slated to start tonight for the Blackhawks, who look to make it 24 games without a regulation loss to start the season. Michael Frolik is out again tonight (ill). Quenneville said Frolik is questionable to travel to Denver due to that illness.

The 26-year-old Bollig played in 11 games with the Blackhawks this season, tallying 40 penalty minutes. With Bollig’s reassignment to Rockford, it can only be assumed that defenseman Steve Montador, who did not pass the team physical to start the season, has been cleared.

Coach Joel Quenneville will address the media at 5 p.m. today prior to the Blackhawks hosting the Colorado Avalanche.
