Revenue sharing an issue as NHL lockout looms

The forecast didn't seem encouraging in the first place.
Now, the storm clouds are on the horizon, and the warnings are out.NHLPA Executive Director Donald Fehr and NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman emerged from a two-hour labor meeting in New York Thursday in agreement on one thing: a wide disparity on the key issue of this collective bargainingnegotiation- revenue-sharing.
Bettman also made clear that when the current deal expires five weeks from Saturday (September 15th), there will be a lockout if no deal has been reached. Fehr had previously suggested that if talks are making reasonable progress at that time, he'd have no problem with training camps and the preseason opening while negotiations continued. Bettman claims the Players Association has known that was his stance the entire time.Management's made the lone proposal in this negotiation, back on July 13. It included sweeping changes to the current deal which has resulted in the league enjoying unprecedented income. The union was not expected to react well to it, but had put on a positive front until Fehr's comments Thursday, calling the sides having a "meaningful gulf" on revenue-sharing. Under the old deal, players received 57 percent of hockey-related revenues, by far the most of the four major sports. The owners' first proposal cut it it 46 percent - a 450 million swing of money shifting from one side to the other.The NHLPA is expected to submit its first proposal Tuesday. The line has been drawn by Bettman, under whom the league has gone in lockout mode twice. It's obvious the pace of negotiations will at least have to pick up if the NHL is to avoid a third lockout in 18 years.

Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews have always had a brother-type relationship on and off the ice since coming up to the National Hockey League together in 2007-08, and now their bromance has shifted to social media.

Toews, who turned 28 years old last Friday, received birthday wishes all day from fans on Twitter, including Kane, who doesn't tweet often — at least during the season.

While the birthday wish was appreciated, the Blackhawks captain still felt a little empty:

It took a few days but Kane eventually gave in on Wednesday and followed Toews, albeit reluctantly:

Meanwhile, Toews is still getting the hang of Twitter.

Many of the replies he gets are from fans calling him "dad" or "goat," and he can't figure out why:

The Blackhawks even offered to inform him what it means, but the fans were quick to let Toews know (GOAT is short for "greatest of all time"):

It's safe to say the Blackhawks aren't used to these long summers. Chicago isn't either.

Report: Blackhawks sign Gustav Forsling to entry-level contract

The Blackhawks have reportedly signed defenseman Gustav Forsling to a three-year entry-level contract, according to Johan Svensson of Kvällsposten.

According to the report, Forsling's deal will include a loan clause that allows him to return to Europe for the 2016-17 season if he doesn't crack the Blackhawks' roster out of training camp.

The 19-year-old Swedish defenseman spent the last two seasons with Linkopings HC of the Swedish Hockey League, where he accumulated nine goals and 18 assists in 86 combined games.

He also played a significant role with Sweden in the 2015 IIHF World Junior Championship, registering three goals and five assists in seven games. His eight points led all defensemen in the tournament, and was tied for fourth-most among all skaters.

Forsling was acquired by the Blackhawks in Jan. 2015 from the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for defenseman Adam Clendening.

He was a fifth-round pick (No. 126 overall) by the Canucks in the 2014 NHL Draft.
