With Matt Garza currently sick, the Cubs called up Travis Wood to take Garza's spot in the rotation.

The only problem is, whose spot would Wood take on the roster?

The Cubs answered that question Sunday morning, designating utility man Blake DeWitt for assignment to make room for Wood on the roster.

DeWitt was designated for assignment this winter to make room for Adrian Cardenas, but DeWitt cleared waivers and eventually won his spot back with the big-league club in spring training. Manager Dale Sveum hopes that happens again.

Hopefully he clears waivers and elects to stay with us, Sveum said before Sundays series finale against the Dodgers. Its just an unfortunate thing more than anything, just because of the flu bug cost the guy a job in the big leagues. Hopefully he stays in the organization and doesnt get claimed so hes back here to help us sometime soon.

DeWitt was hitting .138 with no home runs and one RBI in 18 games.
