DeWitt takes long way back to Cubs

MESA, Ariz. Blake DeWitt took the long way to Arizona, driving from his home in Missouri and reporting to Cubs camp on Thursday at Fitch Park.

This much hasnt changed: DeWitt will still have to fight for a utility job, and he will be paid 1.1 million this season. But its been a roundabout couple of weeks for DeWitt, who attended the Cubs Convention last month and avoided arbitration on Jan. 17 by agreeing to a one-year deal.

Once the Cubs claimed infielder Adrian Cardenas off waivers from the Oakland As on Feb. 6, they designated DeWitt for assignment. DeWitt cleared waivers and on Monday officially accepted the outright to the minors.

Whats kind of weird about the whole situation is this time of year as a player youre ready to get back on the field, DeWitt said. To not know where youre going to be (was) just kind of strange.

With this move, DeWitt guarantees his salary for 2012, and he will have an opportunity to win a bench job. The 26-year-old hit .265 in 121 games with the Cubs last season. The former first-round pick who was acquired from the Los Angeles Dodgers in the Ted LillyRyan Theriot deal at the 2010 trade deadline is ready to compete.

Im glad its over. Im glad to be back, DeWitt said. Chicagos a great city. You want to be a part of something here. Its a special place.
