Cespedes establishes residency, free agency coming soon

Yoenis Cespedes is officially a resident of the Dominican Republic.

The Cuban defector gained residency in the DR according to Tuesday reports, the first step in his journey to the MLB.

Now Cespedes only needs to be granted approval from Major League Baseball to be declared a free agent.

Once that happens, the bidding will start for the services of the 26-year-old outfielder.

Both Chicago teams are reportedly high on Cespedes, with the Cubs possibly more interested given the last week's news. The Marlins, Tigers, Orioles and Indians have also expressed interest.

Cespedes' deal should be worth more than the six years, 30.25 million fellow Cuban Aroldis Chapman earned in 2010.

Cespedes just finished a stint with the Aguilas Cibaenas in the Dominican Winter League, hitting .143 with a homer in 35 at-bats. But, he hit .333 with 33 bombs and 99 RBI in 90 games in Cuba last year.

Expect free agency approval to happen in the next few days.
