According to ESPN's Joe Schad, former Notre Dame quarterback Gunner Kiel has found a new home.

Schad reported Wednesday that Kiel has enrolled at Cincinnati, which is about an hour and 45 minutes away from his hometown of Columbus, Ind. Kiel committed to Notre Dame last year after citing a desire to play closer to home than he would've if he went to LSU, from which he decommitted to enroll in South Bend.

Kiel was expected to compete with quarterback Everett Golson this spring, and while his chances of replacing the incumbent starter were slim, it was somewhat surprising for Kiel to transfer even before spring practice began.

Coach Brian Kelly was at least a little bit surprised by the move, too.

"We had kind of created an opportunity for him to compete in the spring, so maybe a little surprised from that standpoint because he was actually told that he would be given an opportunity to compete," Kelly said in March. "Sometimes when you don't hear that, you wouldn't be surprised because (you're) on the bottom of the depth chart."
