Crain takes a step forward

KANSAS CITY -- Jesse Crain called Friday afternoon a step forward.

The White Sox reliever participated in two separate throwing sessions before the teams series opener against the Kansas City Royals, his first action in a week.

Crain last week was placed on the disabled list retroactive to June 24 with a right posterior shoulder strain.

So its now just going to be building up the arm strength for throwing because Ive taken a week off, Crain said. I think that was pretty necessary to do because it had gotten nowhere in those 12 days previously, so it felt good today.

Crain said he threw from 120 feet and 100 feet on Friday. Next would be a bullpen session on Sunday, followed by another if all goes well, Crain said. The veteran would then like to begin a rehab assignment in order to be ready for a July 23-25 home series against Minnesota.

That would be my goal, for sure, Crain said. But thats just part of how I feel.

The White Sox added another rookie to the bullpen mix on Friday when Jhan Marinez was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte.

Marinez was one of two players acquired from the Miami Marlins last September as compensation for former manager Ozzie Guillen.

He opened the season rated as the No. 7 overall prospect in the organization, according to Baseball America. He is 2-2 with a 3.14 ERA and 47 strikeouts in 26 games this season. Marinez has thrown 13 consecutive scoreless innings over his last six outings.
