The Bulls signed veteran point guard Mike James to a non-guaranteed contract to attend training camp, as first reported by ESPN's Marc Stein. Bulls Insider Aggrey Sam later confirmed the deal.

James, 38, played 11 games for the Bulls in the second half of the 2011-12 season, averaging 4.8 points and 2.6 assists in 10.9 minutes per game off the bench in four different stints. Prior to that James had been out of basketball for one year. playing professionally in Turkey during the 2010-11 season.

Last year James signed a one-year deal with Dallas and saw extended minutes in the Mavericks' injury-riddled backcourt, appearing in 45 games (starting 23 games). In 19.2 minutes he averaged 6.1 points and 3.1 assists while shooting just barely 37 percent from the field.

With Derrick Rose, Kirk Hinrich and Marquis Teague filling the depth chart at the point, James' tryout may be for positional depth and to bring another veteran presence into training camp. James has a relationship with head coach Tom Thibodeau, who was an assistant with the Rockets during the 2004-05 season.
