Pena, who hit 28 homers and drove in 80 runs last year for the Cubs, was offered arbitration this offseason coming off a one-year "pillow" contract. The Cubs spread out the 10 million they owed him over three fiscal years and still have roughly 3 million left, according to several reports.

Had Pena, a Type B free agent, accepted arbitration, he would have likely earned around 10 million again, something the Cubs did not want.

Instead, Pena's deal with the Rays gives the Cubs a sandwich pick in between the first and second rounds in the upcoming June amateur draft. This follows a practice Theo Epstein was famous for in Boston -- letting Type A or B free agents walk to receive compensatory draft picks.

Pena reportedly wanted to go back to the Rays, who desperately needed another bat at first base or DH. This is a win for all involved.

#Back2BackOneDay: What is Bryce Harper trying to say about his future, Kris Bryant and the Cubs?

#Back2BackOneDay: What is Bryce Harper trying to say about his future, Kris Bryant and the Cubs?

Bryce Harper someday joining the Cubs has been prime speculation fodder this summer.

But does Harper know something we don't?

The Washington Nationals superstar — who's slated to become a surely record-breaking free agent after the 2018 season — posted a picture of him and fellow Las Vegas native Kris Bryant on Instagram after Tuesday night's game between the Cubs and Nationals in the nation's capital.

A nice picture, sure. But the important part is the hashtags, one of which is #Back2BackOneDay.

Oh really, Bryce?

Is baseball's biggest star hinting at a potential future in a Cubs uniform, batting right behind Bryant, the Cubs' current All-Star third baseman and reigning National League MVP?

Let the speculation train continue to roll down the tracks. Harper's certainly providing enough energy.
