White Sox make first round of spring cuts

The White Sox announced their first round of spring roster moves Wednesday, assigning five players to minor league camp, optioning Gregory Infante to Triple-A Charlotte and adding infield prospect Tyler Saladino to major league camp.

Catcher Damaso Espino, pitchers Brian Omogrosso and Jacob Petricka and outfielders Brandon Short and Delwyn Young were send to minor league camp. There weren't any surprises there -- Petricka's the biggest name of the group, but the 23-year-old hasn't pitched above Double-A yet. Short's move was just a formality, as the outfielder will likely miss the entire 2012 season following surgery to repair a torn labrum.

Infante could've had a chance to win a bullpen job in the majors with an impressive spring, but the generally-wild reliever walked three in two innings, showing little progress in a small sample size.

It's neat to see Saladino get bumped up to major league camp, even if his stay isn't very long. He was regarded by most as the best or second-best position player prospect in the White Sox system, and Buddy Bell even hinted he could help the major league club out sometime this season.
