The Cubs avoided arbitration with starting pitcher Jeff Samardzija on Saturday by agreeing to terms on a one-year deal worth $5.345 million. The Cubs and Samardzija had until Feb. 21 to negotiate and avoid going into arbitration.
Samardzija had a 4.34 ERA and 1.35 WHIP in 33 games in 2013. He also finished the season with a career-high 214 strikeouts.
The 29-year-old Samardzija broke into MLB with the Cubs in 2008. He has a career ERA of 4.19 and a win/loss record of 29-35 in 189 games.
Samardzija will become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2014 season if the Cubs fail to sign him to a long-term extension.
